Welcome to Briards du Soleil
The Briard is an ancient French herding breed, also known as the Chien Berger de Brie.  Thomas Jefferson is credited with bringing the first Briards to the United States in the late 1700's.  The Briard is an extremely intelligent breed, and is generally good natured.  They are charming, yet opinionated, stubborn and have the ability to make their own decisions, extremely loyal to their family, and typically aloof with strangers.  They are a herding dog and a guard dog.  Bred to drive sheep and to guard them from prey, and thus guard their human families too.  Because of their inherent nature, early and continued socialization is critical for a happy, healthy, well mannered dog.  Therefore, the Briard is not for everyone.  The best Briard homes are committed to proper socialization, training and physical activities.

"He is a dog at heart, with spirit and initiative, wise and fearless with no trace of timidity, intelligent, easily trained, faithful, gentle, and obedient.  The Briard possesses an excellent memory and an ardent desire to please his master.  He retains a high degree of his ancestral instinct to guard home and master.  Although he is reserved with strangers, he is loving and loyal to those he knows.  Some will display a certain independence."     (...from the AKC Standard)
