Phoebe was born December 16, 1997.  I had just lost my Cocker Spaniel, Barney, and went to the local dog show at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore, looking for my next breed.  I had always admired the Briard, but never met one personally.  Parked right next to me was a woman getting out of her van with three Briards.  I followed her in talking to her about the breed, and learned there was a woman with a litter that would be there.  The following weekend I went to that breeders house and spent the day playing with the litter and learning about the breed.  Two weeks later, I brought Phoebe home.

I showed Phoebe occasionally in Conformation, despite not knowing what I was doing.  Our first show, Phoebe, at seven months old, was at the 1998 Briard Club of America National Specialty in Andover, Mass.  What an introduction to dog shows that was.  Phoebe won third in a very large 6-9 month class, and I felt like we had won Best of Breed.  I remember carrying that big yellow ribbon around for hours.

Phoebe was a sweet and pretty girl, but also very strong minded and very typical of Briard temperament.  She taught me to be the pack leader of the house, and that discipline, training, and proper socialization is very important in raising a well mannered Briard.   Phoebe is where my love of this breed began.
